Maybe you’re coming to the Big Island for a much needed vacation, or to take a look at a few properties you may want to consider as a vacation home or rental investment. No matter the reason for your visit, there is a lot more to Hawaii than sun, surf and sand! Since you had to fly to get here, you’ll want to take a road trip once you’re on the island. Sometimes the best way from point A to point B isn’t the straightest or the shortest, it’s the most scenic! Here are a few our Big Island luxury real estate brokers highly recommend.

Mauna Loa Road in Volcano Village is a popular road trip and one that’s not too long, just over 22 miles round-trip. From Volcano Village you’ll go west and follow highway 11 toward Kona, then at the Mauna Loa Road exit sign turn toward the mountain. This is a great one for those who enjoy hiking as there is a beautiful trail at the Bird Park that’s a mile long.

Once said to be the “most dangerous” road in the world, Saddle Road is a great road trip if you’re one of those who loves nothing better than a thrill! Build in 1942 by the military, its original purpose was to get from one side of the island to the other by the shortest route possible. Saddle Road takes you straight through from Kona to Hilo (or vice-versa) where you’ll pass between Mauna Kea Mountain and Mauna Loa Mountain, the two largest mountains on the Big Island. It’s safe today and the road is well maintained, but it’s still a thrilling excursion.

Take a road trip to Hilo. No matter what region of the island you’re on, Hilo is a great destination for those who enjoy new experiences and natural wonders. Be sure to check out the Laupahoehoe Train Museum and Waipio Ridge Stables where you can tour the area by horseback! You’ll also want to see Rainbow Falls at Wailuku State Park and tour through downtown Hilo, where you can immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture and enjoy lunch or dinner at one of the upscale eateries.

These are just a few of the memorable road trips you can enjoy while you’re here; there are lots more! No matter what direction you choose to go, there are wonderful things to see and experience.
