Recently, Hawaii’s Big Island was named the Best Winter Vacation spot in the world by U.S. News & World Report! Of the top 20 winter vacation spots around the globe, we took number 1. Why are we not surprised? Some people really do like cold weather, snow, and all that goes along with the winter months. For most, however, it’s a warm, sunny, inviting locale that’s conjured up in the mind when it’s freezing outside!

Of course there are snow-covered peaks on the Big Island, but there’s also lush rain forests and beautiful sand beaches that beckon you to relax and soak up the sun. It’s really no wonder our island is the most popular destination of travelers when the weather turns cold.

The Big Island was named number 1 by U.S. News & World Report as well as travelers for the excellent surfing conditions and warm weather. The publication also ranks us at the top spot for the best beaches not only in the U.S., but around the globe.

Ross Birch, Executive Director at Hawaii Island Visitors Bureau recently attended the IMEX America exhibit in Las Vegas to promote Hawaii Island. Birch said of the news, “It’s about time they figured it out.” Mayor Harry Kim said of the island being recognized that he was surprised the island’s people and food weren’t mentioned.

In choosing the Best Vacations the publication studied over 700 destinations and scored them in various categories such as adventure, culture, sights, nightlife and more. In addition to editor and expert analysis, travelers’ opinions were also used in the methodology.

The top 4 Best Winter Vacation spots behind the Big Island were Rome, Italy; Jackson Hole, Wyoming; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Phuket, Thailand.
