Hawaii is a prime destination for those who enjoy an active lifestyle, and if you enjoy hiking you will be happy to learn of some of the best hikes you’ll find on the Big Island. Whether you live here or are hoping to invest in a home or vacation property, we want to share some of the best spots for those who are passionate about not only hiking, but taking in the natural beauty the island has to offer.

Mauna Kea Humu'ula Trail

The Mauna Kea-Humu’ula Trail near Hilo is great for experienced hikers, and features a lake as you hike the highest mountain in the world. From the mountain you’ll take in spectacular views of other Hawaiian islands, the ocean, nature and more. If you love bird watching, this is the adventure for you – but be prepared, this is not one for casual hikers!

Pololu Valley

Pololu Valley is a great hike and considered moderately difficult, but the photo opportunities are definitely worth the effort. At the head of the Kohala Coast on the northern side of Kohala Mountain you’ll enjoy a magnificent and old part of the Big Island that offers breathtaking beaches, deep valleys and the rugged beauty of the coastline with the best views from the Pololu Overlook. Hike, spend some down time on the beach and snap some amazing photos.

Akaka Falls

If a short, easy hike is more your speed you’ll want to check out ‘Akaka Falls State Park, where you can enjoy the lookout over the free-falling ‘Akaka Falls waterfall that’s over 440 feet tall. This is a paved trail that takes you through expansive, picturesque views along the lush upcountry rainforest. Because this area of the island receives a lot of rain, you’ll want to bring along the mosquito repellent! This is a gorgeous short hike everyone can enjoy.

There are many other great hikes on the Big Island including The Puna Trail, Kiholo Bay, Waimanu Valley and Mauna Kea on Saddle Road to name a few.

Mauna Loa

If you want to backpack there are a few destinations you may want to check out including the Napau Trail and Mauna Loa.

Whether you enjoy a more leisurely stroll or are looking for a hiking experience that challenges your ability and expertise, you will find it all on the Big Island.
