Head to the Big Island

It’s often during the summer months when the kids are out of school that families head to the Big Island for a much-needed vacation. While our Hawaii luxury real estate professionals would love to show you a few vacation or “second home” properties while you’re here, we always enjoy sharing tips with our readers to make your stay fun and enjoyable.

Unlike some of the other Hawaiian islands, the Big Island isn’t too “touristy.” The eastern side of the island is where you’ll find Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, waterfalls, and lots of outdoor adventures, but the western side is where most visitors tend to gather along the Kohala Coast where there are endless beaches and great resorts. Either way, if your vacation is a week-long you won’t want to wear yourself (and your kids) out by trying to pack everything in during your stay!

Hit the Beach

Whether the Hapuna Beach, the beach at Kauna’oa Bayonne, or Punalu’u Black Sand Beach on the south end of the island, most who come to Hawaii are in search of sand, sun, water and fun. It doesn’t cost anything to enjoy the beautiful beaches, so grab the kids and settle in for a relaxing, fun day on the water.

Kohala Flumin'

Take a ride in the Kohala Ditch with Flumin’ Kohala. Located in Hawi at the north side of the island, you and the kids will have a blast as you ride a kayak-style raft through 22 miles of channels, dark tunnels and historic irrigation flumes. You’ll need to carve out about half a day for this fun and historical adventure.

Go Ziplining

If your kids aren’t too young, you may want to go ziplining. You’ll find ziplining facilities in several locations on the island, and it’s a favorite activity among visitors who enjoy seeing the landscape from a different point of view high in the sky. Zipping along a cable high above the ground isn’t for everyone, but those who love excitement and some adrenalin-pumping fun won’t miss out on the opportunity!

Helicopter Tours

Families with kids also enjoy taking helicopter tours of the island, visiting some of the gorgeous waterfalls, and of course you’ll want to try some shave ice! Some of the waterfalls require some impressive hiking skills to reach them, but not all do. Akaka Falls on the Hilo side of the island is one of the most beautiful and it’s not difficult to access.

Of course there are luaus to enjoy, farmers’ markets where you’ll find delicious local produce and fruit, shopping, restaurants and more. Too much to try to fit into a single visit, so you’ll have to come back again to experience it all.
