As Big Island luxury real estate brokers we often get asked what it’s like to live in Kailua-Kona on the island’s west side. We will do our best to answer and give you an idea about what life is like in this area that was once a small fishing village.
Kailua-Kona
With temperatures typically ranging between 80 and 87 degrees during the daytime hours, Kailua-Kona is the perfect location for those who desire warm weather without a lot of rainfall. Some areas of the island get a substantial amount of rain every year, however in this area it’s generally about 32 inches annually.
Farmers' Markets
Farmers’ markets are a big part of the scene in the Kona District, where you can enjoy a wide array of local vegetables, fruits, flowers, honey, coffee, jams, and even handmade crafts. Alii Drive, a mile-long stretch running through the heart of Kailua-Kona, is where you can find all this and even live music from Wednesday through Sunday each week.
Beauty Abounds
Of course, you’ll have easy access to beautiful beaches; after all, what would Hawaii be without them? Whether you enjoy kayaking, fishing, snorkeling, surfing, or just walking along the beach at sunset, Kailua-Kona is just a stone’s throw away from Keauhou Bay and Kealakekua Bay. Depending on where you are in Kona, a few minutes' walk will take you to Kahaluu Beach Park. You’ll also want to check out picturesque White Sands Beach, a great spot for those who are passionate about surfing and other water sports.
Outdoorsy types and those who are passionate about golfing will love this area as well for its hiking and golf opportunities. If you’re more the type who likes to take life at a slow pace, browse the many charming shops and galleries.

When it’s time for lunch or dinner, Huggo’s On the Rocks and Kona Inn Restaurant are where you can not only enjoy great food, but spectacular ocean views. Kona Brewing Company, Foster’s Kitchen, 808 Grindz, Krua Thai Cuisine and Sushi Shiono are a few of the other many restaurants you’ll find in Kailua-Kona.
Mokuaikaua Church
Rich in history, Kailua-Kona is the location of the Mokuaikaua Church, the first Christian church in the state of Hawaii which was built nearly 200 years ago in 1820. Alii Drive is also where you can see King Kamehameha I’s personal temple, Ahuena Heiau.
