As if all of the beaches, festivities, culture, outdoor adventures, volcanoes, gorgeous weather, golf opportunities and events weren’t enough to entice nearly anyone to make the move to the Big Island of Hawaii, now there’s one more – the Central Bark Dog Parks, slated for its grand opening on April 28.
For many people, dogs are a much-loved member of the family. Having spaces where they can romp, play, get wet and socialize with other dogs and their “people” is important! The Central Bark Dog Park is provided by the Hawaii Island Humane Society, and both the Animal Community Center and the new dog park are located in Keauhou Mauka on Highway 180 (Mamalahoa Highway) close to the Hawaii County Water Dept.
Of course a few rules have been established for dogs and their people. For instance, unruly dogs must exit, children cannot play on the dogs’ water features and equipment, children and dogs must be well supervised, toys, bicycles and strollers are not allowed, owners must have a current County dog license and dogs’ vaccinations must be current, etc.
Hawaii Island Humane Society executive director Donna Whitaker said they are excited to provide the community with a safe, controlled environment where dogs can play off leash. Two parks provide fun for dogs of all sizes that include a bone-shaped splash pad, lots of shade and benches for sitting and more.
The Central Bark Dog Parks is the first phase of an Animal Community Center that will encompass 12 acres and include an education center, veterinary clinic, welcome center and other amenities.
